Best Time to Visit Rwanda: Month by Month Guide

Rwanda's Climate Overview

Rwanda enjoys a mild, temperate climate thanks to its high elevation. The country sits just south of the equator but temperatures are moderated by altitude — Kigali sits at 1,500m and feels comfortably warm rather than tropical hot.

Dry Season: June to September

June to September is Rwanda's long dry season and the most popular time to visit. Skies are clear, roads are passable, and wildlife concentrates around water sources in Akagera. Gorilla trekking is easier on dry, firm trails. This is peak season — book well in advance.

Short Dry Season: December to February

December to February is Rwanda's short dry season. Christmas and New Year see many visitors but numbers drop in January — this is a great time for value. Gorilla trekking is excellent and Akagera's wildlife viewing is good.

Long Rainy Season: March to May

March to May is the long rainy season. Forests are intensely green and lush. Gorilla trekking continues in the rain — and permits are easier to find. Nyungwe is particularly spectacular with waterfalls in full flow. Some dirt roads become difficult and prices drop significantly.

Short Rainy Season: October to November

October and November bring short rains — often afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. This is a beautiful and often underrated time to visit. Prices are lower, crowds are thinner, and the landscape is stunning green.
